Mental Health Initiative

Dear friend,

Today is @bell_letstalk day and in the spirit of this conversation I am reaching out to share details about the launch of our Mental Health Initiative.

Mental health can’t be seen or heard. Being born in a south Asian home welcomes one of the biggest stigmas towards mental health, like a taboo we are one of the many races the frowns upon the mention of its existence. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. But how do we bring it up, if no one will support us or educate the world about the extent of its existence?

As an advocate for people living with mental illness I have been in the background to many charitable events by either participation, volunteering and/or donations. In 2009 I co-organized a Photography exhibit combined with a silent auction which aimed to take a positive approach to mental health by sharing personal stories combined with a performance dance piece and vocal artists. The event was a great success, having raised $2000 towards CMHA.

This year we decided to take part in Bell Let’s talk day by connecting with mental illness on a personal level. This story illustrates the bond of two South Asian friends sharing their personal stories and discussing the stigma surrounding mental health. Myself, Malinda Chohan – owner of Banglez Jewelry and Iman Grewal – Self Employed Publicist, Clothing Stylist and Events Director.

Our childhood bond grew from this struggle and together we realized that it has become an important story that we were ready to share. In hopes, it would encourage others to start talking and sharing their experiences. We feel mental Health is worth celebrating!

Countless individuals struggle with mental health in innumerable ways, some distinctly obvious and others so minuscule that the average eye may pass it off as a life stressor. However, when it exists close to you or in your own home, we owe it to them and ourselves to ease their struggle by truly listening and learning how we can help. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to heal from such experiences, which is why we owe to them to show courage and share our story.

Let’s break the stigma! If not for ourselves, then in honour of those who came before us whose voice weren’t heard or of those will come after us.”As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” Let’s stop being afraid, let’s figure it out together…lets talk 🙂

Together with our incredible team, we are humbly asking women from our community to share their stories with us. Submit a short video or email explaining your personal experience. In doing so, we’d love to treat you to an intimate mini photoshoot day! We welcome all submissions – this is an LGTBQ positive eventđź’—

Together with our talented partners, we will select 2 – 4 females from the submissions. The ladies will receive a Hair and Makeup Application taking place at Blend Hair & Makeup Studio by lead makeup artist Sarah Stewart and lead hairstylist Sonia Singh.

They will then head to Banglez where they will be styled by Iman Grewal. Clothing courtesy of Figjam. As well as of course full access to jewelry from Banglez – South Asian Inspired Jewelry.

Once they’re looking and feeling their best, Narbir Gosal of Brown Rice Photography will take their photos for their mini photography session onsite.

Vinay of The Midnight Media who created the video to help us tell our story will also be capturing the ladies throughout their day of being pampered.

Our hope is to have a positive and uplifting day in an open, non-judgmental environment! Please get in touch with us and help spread the word #bellletstalk #bellletstalkday #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #shareyourstory

“When we deny our stories, they define us.

When we own our stories, we get to write a brave new ending.
